Visa and the Government of Rwanda partner with the transportation industry to promote financial literacy

Visa launches educational taxi CDs in Rwanda

Kigali, RWANDA – August, 21 2012 – The Rwanda transportation industry has become a new partner in a financial literacy initiative championed by Visa and the Government of Rwanda.

The Taxi CD launch will see three thousand CDs featuring songs by some of Rwanda's best and most loved musicians coupled with financial literacy messages, distributed to commuters through Rwanda's long and short distance transportation industry network.

Ginger Baker, the Managing Director of Visa Rwanda, said: "As part of our partnership with the Government of Rwanda, Visa is working to bring financial literacy education to Rwanda through a number of communication channels. The CDs are another step towards ensuring we continue reaching diverse groups of Rwandans throughout the country. We see financial literacy as a building block towards an empowered society where people are able to make informed decisions around their financial lives."

"Visa and the Government of Rwanda have committed to 'electronifying' Rwanda through a number of initiatives aimed at modernising the financial services sector. As more people are introduced to the formal banking sector, financial literacy becomes even more important."

The launch events are scheduled to take place at three different taxi ranks in Kigali – Nyabugogo Park, Remera Taxi Park and the Kigali Bus Park Yard. Each event will be backed by an industrial theatre performance to ensure the audience accesses information about financial services in a fun and engaging way.

"The two-pronged approach is effective in that the public will be entertained while they learn. We specifically chose to couple the Taxi CD launch with the performances because it's a tried and tested approach to delivering financial literacy messages in Rwanda," added Baker.

Using the art of storytelling, the performances will take the audience through processes involved in opening a bank account and also addresses matters related to developing a sensible budget.

"We are hopeful that the participation of Rwanda's best loved musicians will also have an impact on the lives of the Rwandan people. As part of international best practice, Visa entered into formal agreements with the musicians and they will be recognised through payment of royalties for their participation in the project," explained Baker.

The Taxi CD launch will take place over three consecutive days from 21 to 23 August 2012.
