Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
Having a job is not without risk. You could lose your job and your earnings due to a dismissal, retrenchment or illness.
You can be dismissed as an employee when your employer decides that they no longer want you to work for them. There could be many reasons for this decision, such as theft or an illegal strike. The Labour Relations Act, 1995 protects your position as an employee.
You can be retrenched as an employee when your employer decides that they no longer require the job you are doing. In difficult economic times, businesses sometimes must retrench employees in order to avoid going bankrupt.
The Government's Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) protects you in case you lose your job due to retrenchment or illness. It means you will still get an amount of money if you apply to the UIF.
